new york’s new license plate

it’s crazy how much i hold onto my new york roots and how much pride i have for the city.  so even though i live in ann arbor now,  i still keep up with the “local” news.  i read recently that new york state is changing their old blue and white plates for this new design called, “empire gold” which is available to motorists in april 2010.  here’s a side by side of the new design and the current:

what the crap is that?  this thing has like a 1970s/1980s feel to it and it looks like it could be a throwback jersey for the new york knicks.  it’s just wrong.  come april, i’m not sure i want to keep my new york plates.

this is a post i could definitely see my twin writing on her blog but i have fallen in love with these hand made heart picture frames from sarah and bendrix as well as from madebyagirl.  here are some pictures of their works.  i would love to have these in my house one day.  maybe the appeal is the way they’re placed on the walls but i’m smitten.  they’re so simple, i wonder if i could make them too.

actions speak louder than words

2009 October 19

actions speak louder than words is one of those popular phrases that people use especially when it comes to relationships.  the phrase itself is self explanatory; show me rather than tell me.  i googled where the origin of this saying comes from and it’s been lost to time but there have been many people that have similar words.  one is from a 16th century writer, michel de montaigne and he  said, “saying is one thing, doing is another.”  before him, st. francis of assisi also embodied this principle by saying, “preach the gospel at all times.  use words if necessary.”  and before him was confucius who said, “i hear and i forget.  i see and i remember.  i do and i understand.”

what is it about words that make them so insignificant?  think about it, we love writers because they are able to express all this emotion/thoughts that we cannot into complete rational sentences in the form of poems, short stories, novels and other literacy. some of us journal and write as a release to get our thoughts down on paper while others devote their time to figuring out exactly the right thing to say to someone else to show how they truly feel.  how is it that words can stab us in the heart like a tiny needle jabbing in and out.  how can we say that words have a smaller effect on us than action?  i have a theory and it’s very simple; behind every word is a potential to deceive and lie.  people want proof that they are loved and that they mean the world to someone else.  people want assurance that the president is going to do something about the healthcare system and not just make pretty speeches about it.  people want to feel that secure feeling and know that the truth they believe in is real.  therefore words which have the tendency to fall short, will always comes second to an action that shows you what you crave.  mostly, i think that action is needed because words simply aren’t enough.

on a more personal note, i still believe this old fashioned theory that all a person really has is their word and whether they honor it or not.  it really is that simple.
